rattan

Rattan is a kind of palm, found in tropical regions of Africa, Asia and Australaia. Most rattan is found in Indonesia and grows up to 100 yards long, with stems 1-3 inches in diameter. Their stems are solid, rather than hollow contributing to their strength.

Rattan is used for making furniture and baskets. It is lightweight, durable and relatively flexible, making it a great material for making furniture. It accepts paint and stains like wood, allowing it to be distributed in many colors and styles. Rattan furniture can serve both outdoor and indoor purposes. Many choose to cover portions of rattan furniture with cushions, adding style and extra padding.
rattan
rattan It is believed that the Egyptians were the first to use rattan, around 4000 BC. The first known piece in America was a wicker crib, arriving in 1620. Furniture made from rattan became very popular in England and America during the 17th and 18th century. Rattan furniture designs were natural and elegant, resembling furniture from the Victorian era. Rattan furniture, however, was less expensive and less bulky than furniture from this time. It was manufactured in America for the first time in the mid 1800’s.
