Antique paperweights usually come from the classical period of manufacture, which flourished in the mid to late 1800’s.
Types of manufacture of this period are generally created by either placing cut or blown glass pieces into an existing weight, know as “Lampwork”, or by taking small rods of glass and using them to create a design, generally of an arboreal nature, which is known as Millefiori. Other designs may coating the glass orb with a layer of glass or inserting a picture to commemorate an event.

Contrary to popular belief, the paperweight is almost never used for holding paper in place. Usually crafted from glass, the paperweight is used as a means for various artists to show off their skill in crafting items from glass using a variety of methods.
Paperweights are collected by thousands. Most collectors focus on “classical” pieces, made in the 19th century. The most popular classical pieces come from one of three manufacturers in France.
